World Backup Day
World Backup Day (which we think should be every day!)
Data loss can happen at any time and always when least expected. The leading causes of data loss are system failures, human error, software corruption, computer bad stuff like viruses and even natural disasters. If you don’t’ have a backup automatically running, you take the chance of losing your data.
Your backup can protect you from any of these bad things because it will allow you to restore any time disaster strikes. A great backup strategy includes a second copy at an off-site location. 3-2-1 Rule creates triple redundancy so if one backup fails, you still have options. Copies can be stored in the cloud, on your local drive, through a network share, on tape or disc.
Using the cloud for one of your 3-2-1 backups provides unlimited access from anywhere, anytime and usually includes encryption and a continuous backup. The first backup to the cloud is usually very slow and there are costs involved. Technically the data is not really in your control but it is still a perfect option to include in your backup plan. Some online backup services allow you to select the files you want to backup and others backup your entire computer. Daily is best. After the initial backup, new and revised files backup much faster.
Remember, even the best backup software is worthless if it can’t restore your files. You should perform regular restore tests to make sure everything is in working order.
Frightening statistics that might help you chose to backup (and these numbers rise every day):
- 30% of people never backup
- 113 phones are lost or stolen every minute
- 1/10th of all computers are infected with a virus each month and those may suddenly cause all of your data to be gone beyond retrieval
- 29% of data-disasters are accidental
- 67% of data loss in business is from hacking
You can’t recover what you didn’t back up: this is the undeniable truth about disaster recovery and business continuity. Every home and every business, no matter the size, needs a documented backup and recovery plan supported by a managed data protection solution-as-a-service (as provided through Stress Free IT) that’s ready for the unintentional, inevitable, and unexpected.
World Backup Day is set aside as a reminder to backup your files. There’s nothing more traumatizing than losing all of your irreplaceable documents or photos.
